Los Angeles: Eva Marie Saint, the Oscar-winning actress who made a remarkable film debut opposite Marlon Brando before starring in one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most celebrated thrillers, has reportedly died at the age of 102.
Saint passed away on Tuesday, October 6, at her home in Los Angeles. According to a family representative, she died of natural causes, surrounded by loved ones.
She was widely regarded as one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age and, in recent years, held the distinction of being the oldest living Oscar winner.
From Newark to Broadway
Born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, Saint grew up in Albany and Delmar, New York.
She enrolled at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, initially planning to become a schoolteacher. However, a drama professor encouraged her to participate in a school play, setting her on a different career path.
Saint began her career in radio and early television. She later became a regular on the series One Man’s Family and made her Broadway debut in The Trip to Bountiful in 1953.
An Oscar-Winning Film Debut
Saint made her big-screen debut in 1954 in Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront, starring opposite Marlon Brando as Edie Doyle.
Her performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the 1955 Oscars, an extraordinary achievement for her very first feature film.
The movie won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
While accepting her statuette, a visibly nervous Saint joked that she might “have the baby right here.”
Hollywood Stardom and Alfred Hitchcock
Following her Oscar win, Saint established herself as a respected Hollywood actress.
One of her most memorable roles came in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, in which she starred opposite Cary Grant.
Her other film credits included Raintree County, Exodus and All Fall Down.
Throughout her career, Saint moved comfortably between film, television and theatre. She received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognising her contributions to film and television.
In 2000, she hosted a Turner Classic Movies documentary about the making of North by Northwest.
In 2009, she returned to the Academy Awards stage to present the award for Best Supporting Actress, approximately 55 years after receiving the same honour herself.
A Career Shaped by Family
Despite her success in Hollywood, Saint made a conscious decision to limit her film work to spend more time with her family.
She married television director and producer Jeffrey Hayden in 1951. Their marriage lasted 65 years, until his death in 2016.
Hayden also directed Saint in several stage and television productions.
Saint is survived by her two children and grandchildren.
Remembering a Hollywood Legend
Eva Marie Saint’s career spanned approximately seven decades across film, television, theatre and radio.
Her performances reflected a remarkable period in American cinema, and her work in On the Waterfront and North by Northwest secured her place in Hollywood history.
For generations of movie lovers, she will be remembered for her elegance, understated acting style and enduring contributions to the silver screen.
Her reported passing marks the end of another chapter in Hollywood’s Golden Age.
