New Delhi, September 17, 2026:
Mirzapur was released in theatres on September 4, 2026, following the popularity of the original crime series. The film has since attracted attention not only for its box-office performance but also for the controversy surrounding the song ‘Shoorveer’, which has come under legal scrutiny over its use during a violent action sequence.
The Delhi High Court on Thursday raised concerns about the placement of the song in the film and asked the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to consider proposed changes to the sequence.
The controversy centres on ‘Shoorveer’, a song that pays tribute to Maharana Pratap and celebrates his courage. The song is used during a fight sequence in the Mirzapur movie, while the film’s climax features its lead characters in a violent confrontation with rival gang members.
According to proceedings reported by PTI, a bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia orally observed, “Prima facie, it does not appear to be in good taste. We have come to a situation where we are reverencing violence.”

During the hearing, the court questioned whether using the song against a violent backdrop was appropriate.
The filmmakers said that the song was being used as background music to enhance the sequence and that there was no comparison between the characters and any historical figure.
The CBFC’s counsel told the court that the filmmakers had themselves approached the board seeking changes to the background score used in the sequence.
The petitioner’s lawyer also raised the possibility that the plea could become infructuous once the film moves to an OTT platform.
The court again questioned whether using the song against a violent backdrop was appropriate, observing that if the filmmakers were themselves modifying the song with background music, the purpose of the petition could potentially be addressed.
The next hearing, scheduled for September 24, 2026, is expected to provide further clarity on whether any changes will be made to the sequence.
