Saudi Arabia has reported that its Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone south of the holy city of Mecca on Tuesday evening, September 15, before it could enter the city’s restricted airspace. The incident has raised fresh security concerns amid renewed tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement.

According to Major General Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, the drone was intercepted at around 6:50 p.m. local time. Saudi authorities said the drone was destroyed before reaching the prohibited airspace around Mecca.

Al-Maliki condemned the incident as a threat to civilians and worshippers and reiterated that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims remains a “red line.” The incident reportedly triggered brief security alerts in Mecca, Taif and Jeddah. The alert in Mecca was lifted within minutes, according to reports.

The authorities’ rapid response was aimed at preventing any potential threat to worshippers and residents in the area.

The incident has attracted particular attention because Mecca is Islam’s holiest city and receives millions of Muslim worshippers from around the world every year. Any security incident near the city is therefore considered highly sensitive because of the presence of the Grand Mosque and the large number of pilgrims and visitors.

Saudi authorities have linked the intercepted drone to the Houthi movement in Yemen. They described the incident as the first reported Houthi attempt to target Mecca since 2017, when Saudi Arabia accused the group of launching a ballistic missile towards the holy city.

However, the Houthis have denied targeting Mecca or any Islamic holy site and rejected the Saudi allegations. There has been no independent confirmation of the drone’s intended target.

The reported interception comes amid renewed tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement.

The broader conflict has also affected regional security, particularly around Yemen, the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, a major international shipping route.

The incident has once again highlighted the security challenges facing the region. While Saudi Arabia has emphasised its commitment to protecting the Two Holy Mosques and ensuring the safety of worshippers, the conflicting claims surrounding the drone incident remain under scrutiny.

Further information from authorities or independent investigations may be needed to establish the drone’s origin and intended target.

For now, the incident has added to concerns over regional stability and the safety of civilians and worshippers as tensions in the region continue to evolve.
